Mukesh was a very simple man
working for an MNC and just like many other young aspiring men, had come to a
city, thousands of miles away from his home and parents, in order to fulfil his
dreams. Mukesh got married to Sheena, a Middletown girl staying close to his
native place and working in the same city as him.
His ordeal of marrying Sheena
started from the first night itself when Sheena created a fuss on Mukesh going to
meet his mother who had fallen ill. Mukesh, finally gave in to her tantrums and
could not see her ailing mother, but was forced to make love to Sheena.
Mukesh thought and hoped that if
he cooperates with his wife on first night, she would also understand him and
things would be alright. But he was mistaken. His submissive stand on first
night went against him. His wife mistook his silence as his weakness rather
than his love for her. While Mukesh, hoped things would be fine one day, his
ordeal kept on increasing day by day.
Slowly, Mukesh started losing
concentration on his job and was extremely wary of stepping home, not knowing
what would welcome him home – brickbats or short-lived love.
Slowly, his wife started accusing
him of sexual impotency and blamed him for not satisfying her ‘enough’.
She insisted on having sex at least 7 times a day and threatened to go to other
men if he didn’t do it enough.
Even his in-laws supported Sheena
only and forced him to go impotency tests just to satiate Sheena’s inflated ego
and immature adamancy. Mukesh was in deep emotional pain and was not able to
connect with his wife romantically and as a result he stopped enjoying the
sexual encounters which further infuriated his wife, who once threatened him to
jump off the balcony of his flat situated at the thirteenth floor. Somehow
Mukesh satisfied her prevented the suicide.
One day Sheena promised her that
she would improve her behavior. Sensing some change Mukesh took her for a long
drive and there she started demanding that they should have their own house.
Mukesh cited financial constraints for the same as he was still repaying his
education loan and the personal loan he had taken for marriage. Hearing this,
Sheena got extremely angry and opened the door of the car which was running at
almost 70 KMPH, and threatened to jump off the car if Mukesh did not agree to
buy a house soon. Mukesh stopped the car, pacified Sheena, told her that he
will think about it and then only she got back into the car and allowed him to
drive.
Mukesh thought that his troubles
were over but it was only like chasing a mirage in the desert as one day his
wife got angry on him for talking to his mother for long on phone and attacked
him physically, scratched him with nails, all over the body and also made
attacks with a knife. A bleeding Mukesh immediately called up his in-laws and
complained to them about their daughter’s violent behavior, to which they
coldly replied that she will be fine once her anger subsides.
This was an eye opener for Mukesh
and he started looking for some help online when he stumbled upon a community center
for men and approached them for help. After giving Mukesh, a patient listening,
the community center enabled Mukesh to speak up against the abuse and move away
from the abusive atmosphere.
Mukesh got some confidence and talked
to his parents about his ordeal he was going through for the last 2.5 years.
However, Mukesh was shattered when his own parents asked him to adjust with
his wife and keep her happy because if he takes some stand against her, his
marriage might break and this would be devastating for their family.
Mukesh lost all hopes and doesn’t know what to do now after his own parents
refused to support him. There are many such men like Mukesh who are tolerating
wife’s torture silently and there is no protection available for them. As per
records by National Crime Records Bureau, every year 65000 married men are
committing suicides.
Why can't we start a program on TV(about these issues) endorsed by some star like Aamir did for satyamev jayete. It will be an eye opener. And many such cases will come out.
