A SILENT DEATH and A DYING LIFE

Ramesh Nara is a 26 year old young man .He lives in a joint family. He has an old mother, a bed ridden father, a married sister. His father fell ill after a paralysis attack. He has an elder brother who is married for the last five years and those five years were like hell. His Bhabhi (sister-in-law) was a working woman but very abusive as she made life miserable for everyone in the family.

In fact his father’s illness was due the abusive behavior of his daughter-in-law. Elder brother was also not well and was diagnosed with hypertension. As we Indians think that every solution lies in MARRIAGE so Ramesh was married off to a small town girl .Everybody thought that now lives of Nara family will come on track. Just a night before marriage Ramesh’s bhabhi forced herself on Ramesh saying that he should have experience of a woman before marriage. Ramesh slapped her and asked her to stay away from him. He was very upset about this incident and tried to explain it to his brother, mother and father. But he could not as all the three were not in position to do anything about it. Ramesh did not tell anyone about it, next day he was married to this girl,Sapna.

Sapna was a teacher in government school and a very fast girl. She demanded a particular sexual position from Ramesh on their first night. This made Ramesh very uncomfortable, he tried to explain her that this is just the beginning. But Sapna taunted him for not being man enough. Ramesh had to do whatever he was told to do by Sapna. Sapna was also a very abusive wife; she was not interested in any household chores.

She started living her life as per she wanted just like the elder daughter-in-law. Ramesh was raped by his wife every night; his elder brother was getting weaker day by day. One night when Ramesh’s wife was at her parents place he got a phone call fromhis late night,“save me Ramesh they are beating me raping me, please save me.” And then the call was disconnected.He tried to call back but phone was switched off. As his wife was in a different city and it was 1:30 AM at night, Ramesh couldn’t sleep with the thought of how to reach his wife.He tried to call back again but in vain, then he searched the number of one of their neighbors and called them .That neighbor told him that his wife’s father and cousin were beating her.

Next day he went to his in-laws place and saw his wife in a very bad condition. There were injury marks on her body, also marks of biting. He asked her, “What happened to you, what is this?” To which his mother-in-law replied, “Just take your wife back.” Ramesh was annoyed he said, “See I will not take her back in this condition first tell me what is happening here?” Now his wife told him that her father and cousin brother raped her!Ramesh could not digest this and told her clearly he will not take her back in this condition.

Ramesh came back and was much stressed .Every responsibility came onto his shoulders as his brother succumbed to a stroke one day. Now he had two ailing patients in the family, his job and two abusive women to deal with. One day he went to his brother’s room and asked him to have food, his brother was sitting on a chair. Brother turned his face towards Ramesh looked at him and died on the chair only, there were tears in his eyes. His elder brother died a silent death. On the thirteenth day of his death when the rituals were going on, all of a sudden, police came to the house and took Ramesh with them. Ramesh’s mother fainted to see all this. Police took Ramesh to a deserted place and started beating him. Ramesh could not get what is happening; he struggled hard to run away. He ran away and reported to the higher police officials. Orders were passed to suspend the concerned police inspector.

Police inspector came to apologize to Ramesh and asked him to take his complain back. Ramesh asked him why did do all that. Cop replied his wife and Bhabhi paid cops to do it. His bhabhi thought this is the only way to scare Ramesh and have all the property. Ramesh became alert after this; he chucked out his bhabhi and wife from the house.

They both filed multiple cases on Ramesh and his parents. The ordeal for Ramesh started now,as he not only had to take care of the bed ridden father as his old mother could not lift him from bed but also fight the false cases of dowry harassment, domestic violence,maintenance slapped on him. Struggle doubled because he lost his job in all this mess. He was arrested in dowry case and got bail after 22 days. In the meantime, his sister took care of the parents.

He was struggling hard to find job and in maintenancecase. He presented all the evidences that his wife is a government employee and he is jobless. He got to know that his wife and Bhabhi are a part of high profile sex racket. On one hearing judge ordered 5000 INR asmaintenance for his wife ignoring all the facts.

Ramesh got mad on this; he went to the parking of the court and asked the Judge that how come he ordered maintenance. Judge smiled and said, “Chill gentleman de Dena 5000 Rs is nothing”. (Give Rs. 5000 is nothing). Judge hurriedly went inside his car and left the spot. Ramesh was shattered on this, he was crying in his room when his mother heard him crying. She asked him in a worried tone what happened why he is crying like this. He wanted to tell her but could only say,” Iam missing Bhai.”

Courtroom drama continued as his wife and Bhabhi used to come with the same drama. It all came on his health, he started taking anti-depressant. One day he watched a TV program where he saw a fellow talking about men’s right. He searched men’s right on internet and found out an organization.

He went to meet those people and for the first time in life he got a patient and non-judgmental listening. They patiently heard his story, he cried, he poured his heart and felt very light after that. He expressed everything which he never expressed ever, nobody judged him. Listening and a few motivating words made him to carry on with the fight. He was asked whether he wants to die a silent death like his brother or he wants to fight back. He thought of fighting back, cases are still on but he fights with a smile and that is the biggest defeat for his opponents.
